Details About the Program
Explore financial contributions are awarded using a random draw process.
The $2800 contribution is considered taxable income and is paid directly to your host school, which will also provide you with the tax slips you need to attach to your tax return or, alternatively, inform you as to how to get them. The amount remain taxable even if the recipient is expelled or withdraws from the course.
You must provide your Social Insurance Number (SIN) to your host school when registering in order to receive your tax slips. Should you fail to do this, you will be disqualified and your spot awarded to another applicant.
The financial contribution covers the cost of the following:
The following items are not covered:
- registration and transportation fees
- personal expenses
- various optional activities
Explore will not voluntarily match you with your friends or spouse in a single course. Inasmuch as participants are selected by random draw, there is very little chance of being chosen to participate in the program for the same course and at the same school as your friends.
In addition, the names of other participants assigned to the same educational institution as you are kept confidential.
If you are selected during the random draw process, the school where you will attend spring or summer classes will send you a registration kit.The package is usually available online.
The package’s contents and format vary among universities and colleges. In some cases, the package may be a successive series of emails.
In addition to the forms to fill out for opening a file with the host school, the kit contains essential information about confirming your participation in the Explore program and preparing your stay, including the following:
- the deadline for confirming to the host school that you will attend the course
- the official host institution registration form
- the list of compulsory registration documents
- other forms you must fill out (e.g. health, host family lodging, spoken language contract)
- instructions on how to pay your non-refundable registration fees and, as applicable, the security deposit (that may be refunded in accordance with specific terms and conditions)
- descriptions of optional activities, including any fees and registration procedures
- information about the online language test, if any
- available public transportation for travel to your host institution, as well as any special fares that you could benefit from, such as on VIA Rail and Porter Airlines
- possibilities for greeting or accompanying minor-age students
- availability of shuttles between the host institution and the closest airport or train station
- academic materials and personal effects to bring with you
- address of the school’s Facebook page for participants
- information about the host institution and the region
Prior to your arrival, all the information you need should be available in English. If it is not the case, message your host institution.
You will take a language test on-site or online (at the discretion of the institution) prior to or at the start of the session.
The purpose of the test is to place you in a group according to your level of understanding of the second language:
Please note that the advanced level is still considered a learning experience and not a skills development program for bilingual individuals.
Progress tests and final examination
In addition to regular tests you will take during the course, an end-of-course examination will assess your overall progress.
Recognition of acquired competencies
Various schools award credits for completing the Explore Program that may or may not be recognized by the school you attend during the following academic year. You will need to check with the individual school to learn if and how recognition is handled.
If you plan on having the credits recognized or on applying for an equivalency, make sure to keep all the documentation you may need, which includes:
- your transcript
- your specific Program course outline
- the weekly schedule of courses and compulsory activities
- the detailed session calendar
- graded or commented personal assignments
- proof of participation in optional activities
- your official program attestation or certificate
- a portfolio of items you created during the course
