One-time expenses means the sum of such expenses and allowances deemed necessary for the pursuit of studies from September 1, 2019 to August 31, 2020. These expenses are only allowed once per term or upon request from the student.
Educational expenses include:
- Admission fees
- Registration fees
- Tuition fees
- Fees related to instructional services
- Other fees charged by the educational institution
These expenses are allowed for the first month of each study period of at least three months during which you are a full-time, or deemed full-time, student. The maximum amount awarded for educational expenses is $6 000 per period of studies.
Special Allowance for Educational Expenses
The Special Allowance for Educational Expenses, awarded as an additional loan, is intended to offset the rise in university tuition. You could receive an allowance of $29.20 per course credit if you attend a Québec university and have reached the full or first portion loan limit without qualifying for a bursary.
The allowance does not apply to students at the Institut de formation théologique de Montréal nor to students who are pursuing university-level studies at the Conservatoire de musique et d’art dramatique du Québec or at an École du Barreau training centre.
Expenses for the purchase of textbooks, school supplies and specialized equipment

No expenses will be recognized for full-time practicums/internships.
Allowance for the purchase of training support
If you qualify for the Loans and Bursaries Program, you could be entitled to an additional loan of $150 per period of studies for which financial assistance is awarded to you. This allowance is intended to enable you to purchase educational materials for your specific needs. You must claim this amount when filling out your application for financial assistance. Once the allowance is awarded, payment cannot be cancelled.
Allowance for Special Transportation Expenses
Your special transportation expenses could be recognized if there is no overland transportation between your home and your educational institution or the organization hosting your practicum/internship, as long as both are located in Québec and you are a full-time student or doing a full-time practicum/internship.
If your full-time studies or practicum/internship lasts longer than one term, expenses equivalent to the cost of four round-trip economy air tickets between your home and the closest road link are allowed.
If your full-time studies or practicum/internship lasts only one term, an expense equivalent to the cost of two round-trip economy air tickets between your home and the closest road link is allowed.
Expenses for the purchase of visual aids
Expenses for the purchase of visual aids for you or your child could be allowed. The maximum amount available is $193 per person within two consecutive award years. The purchase must have been made during a month where you were covered by the Loans and Bursaries Program. This allowance covers the following:
- Eyeglasses (lenses and frames) prescribed by an optometrist, ophthalmologist or physician (including eye examinations)
- Contact lenses prescribed by an optometrist, ophthalmologist or physician (including eye examinations)
Allowance for students from “outlying” cities, regions or regional county municipalities (RCMs)
Expenses may be allowed if you are a student with a parental contribution, you do not live with your parents, and their residence or your educational institution is located in one of the following cities, regions or RCMs:
- Pontiac RCM
- Vallée-de-la-Gatineau RCM
- Antoine-Labelle RCM
- La Tuque
An amount of $76/month up to a yearly maximum of $608 may be awarded to you for your period of studies. If you are eligible, the amounts allowed will be paid to you the first month of your period of studies.
The following types of medical expenses could be allowed for you, your child or your spouse’s child:
- The purchase of prescription medication
- Chiropractic treatment prescribed by a physician
To be considered, these expenses must exceed $16/month and not have been covered by the Régie de l’assurance maladie du Québec or a private insurance company. If they have, only the portion of the expense not already covered is considered.
