Job description

These individuals determine the value of real estate (land, businesses, estates, etc.), personal property, and household items. They work for the purpose of selling, buying, taxing, or managing assets. They may also carry out program evaluation and internal audits. This group includes estimators, business valuation experts, chartered appraisers, and certified appraisers.

Main tasks

Estimators

  • Assess land, buildings, structures, machinery, equipment, and property improvements.
  • Study and analyze previous sales, ownership titles, and structure plans.
  • Explain estimation procedures to taxpayers.

Business Valuation Experts

  • Collect and analyze a company’s financial records to assess its competitiveness or market value.
  • Prepare estate planning, insurance, and business loss reports.
  • Appear as an expert witness before courts and other regulatory boards or commissions.

Evaluators

  • Determine the value of property, buildings, machinery, equipment, and personal effects.
  • Prepare appraisal reports.

Chartered Appraisers

  • Prepare, draft, and sign a municipal property assessment roll.
  • Verify the accuracy and, if necessary, challenge the municipal assessment of a property.
  • Act as a judge at the administrative tribunal.
  • Appear as an expert witness before a court, securities regulator, and other regulatory boards.
  • Collect and analyze a company’s financial records, such as financial statements and budgets, to assess its market value or competitiveness.

Advancement and mobility

  • Experience leads to management positions.
  • Estimators may specialize as consultants in a particular sector (residential, commercial, industrial, etc.).
  • Appraisers may specialize in a particular field (e.g. real estate appraisal).

The hourly wage is calculated by averaging wages from 2019 to 2021.
