Job description

These individuals diagnose and treat physiological or psychological diseases and disorders. They study their nature and evolution in humans. Some perform and supervise surgical procedures. These people work in:

  • Hospitals and other health facilities
  • Private medical clinics and specialized medical centres
  • Clinical research centres
  • Laboratories

Main tasks

Clinical Medicine Specialists

  • Diagnose and treat diseases and physiological or psychological disorders.
  • Prescribe examinations (laboratory tests, X-rays, etc.), medication, and treatment.
  • Act as a consultant to other physicians.
  • Conduct research as required.
  • Follow up on health conditions when required.

Laboratory Medicine Specialists

  • Study the nature, formation, and evolution of diseases and the changes they cause in humans.
  • Analyze samples and specimens.
  • Supervise laboratory activities.
  • Act as a consultant to other physicians.
  • Conduct research as required.

Surgical Specialists

  • Assess diseases or disorders to determine appropriate surgical procedures.
  • Perform and supervise surgical procedures to correct abnormalities, physical deficiencies, or injuries.
  • Act as a consultant to other physicians.
  • Conduct research as required.
  • Follow up on health conditions when required.

Advancement and mobility

  • Experience leads to management positions.
