Job description
These individuals work with people who are experiencing adjustment difficulties. They use a variety of techniques to facilitate communication and rehabilitation. Their interventions also seek to develop social skills and autonomy. They work in:
- Hospitals
- Rehabilitation centres
- Residential and long-term care centres (CHSLDs)
- Local community service centres (CLSCs)
- Integrated Health and Social Services Centres (CISSS) offering protection and rehabilitation services to troubled youth and their families.

Main tasks
- Develop individualized teaching and intervention plans for people with physical, intellectual, visual, or hearing disabilities.
- Assess people’s physical limitations, orientation abilities, and mobility as well as the cognitive, social, and emotional barriers they encounter.
- Help people acquire practical skills.
- Teach people with physical disabilities and their families to apply rehabilitation techniques and to use prosthetics and wheelchairs.
- Teach visually impaired people to read and write in Braille and to use special aids or equipment (guide animals, long canes, etc.).
- Teach people who are hard of hearing or deaf to read lips, use sign language, and make sounds using hearing aids.
- Collaborate with other specialists (rehabilitation counsellors, speech therapists, occupational therapists, etc.).
