Job description

Dance teachers teach dance techniques and artistic interpretation.

Dancers perform body movements, steps, and figures, alone or with other dancers. They develop the assigned role in a choreographic work and participate in the performance of the work.

Main tasks

Dancers

  • Do regular exercises and repeat dances under the direction of a teacher.
  • Perform dances for a performance, film, or television production.
  • Learn, rehearse, and perform the assigned role in the work.
  • Train and perform exercises to maintain physical fitness and necessary skills.
  • Participate, when appropriate, in the process of creating the choreographic work or adapting a work from the repertoire.
  • Promote their career (career management).
  • Adopt a preventative attitude, for themselves and other interpreters, in terms of health and safety.

Dance teachers

  • Develop a course and lesson plan.
  • Ensure the safety of dance instruction.
  • Prevent injuries through knowledge of the anatomy of movement and body biomechanics.
  • Teach dance techniques and artistic interpretation, individually or in groups.
  • Teach the techniques, cultural origins, and symbolism of native, ethnic, or folk dances.
  • Give lessons in recreational dances (e.g. social dances).
  • Assess students as they learn and provide feedback.
  • Detect and develop the potential of each student.
  • Prepare students for auditions and performances.

Advancement and mobility

  • These individuals may specialize in different types of dance (ballet, folk, modern, etc.).
