Job description

These individuals draw patterns for the production of various items (clothes, shoes, etc.). They may be self-employed or work for patternmakers and manufacturers of textiles, leather, or fur products.

Main tasks

  • Examine sketches, test models, and drawings.
  • Determine the number of pieces in the pattern and the shape and size of each piece.
  • Evaluate the amount of fabric needed to make an item.
  • Draw, trace, and cut out the initial pattern to make an article.
  • Mark details (pleats, pockets, eyelets, decorative stitching, etc.) on pattern pieces.
  • Create patterns of various sizes from the first pattern.
  • Lay out the first pattern on fabric and cut out a master pattern.
  • Identify the size, number, style, and assembly instructions on the patterns.
