Job description

These individuals make breads, muffins, pies, pastries, cakes, and cookies. This group includes supervisors. These people work in:

  • Bakeries
  • Catering services
  • Supermarkets
  • Hotels
  • Restaurants

Environment

  • Controlled ambient temperature
  • Equipment, machinery, tools
  • Odours
  • Nontoxic dust
  • Fire, steam, hot surfaces

Main tasks

  • Prepare dough and glazes according to recipes or special customer orders.
  • Bake the prepared products.
  • Ice and decorate baked goods.
  • Ensure that products meet current quality standards.
  • Set the production schedule and determine the assortment and quantity of goods to produce.
  • Purchase bakery and pastry supplies.
  • Ensure the sale and marketing of products, as required.
  • Hire, train, and supervise staff as required.

Advancement and mobility

  • Qualified bakers obtain a Red Seal endorsement upon successful completion of the Interprovincial Examination.

The hourly wage is calculated by averaging wages from 2019 to 2021.
