Job description
These individuals cover fabric items (furniture, accessories, etc.) with various materials (leather, fabric, etc.).
Environment
- Controlled ambient temperature
- Equipment, machinery, tools
- Nontoxic dust
Main tasks
- Discuss with clients the colour, type, and material to be used.
- Evaluate the cost of the work.
- Lay out, measure, and cut the material according to the sketches or instructions received.
- Replace defective straps, springs, and padding on items.
- Sew cushions and sections of upholstery fabric.
- Install wadding, trim, and upholstery fabric on furniture frames.
- Manufacture, cut, and install upholstery to furnish and decorate vehicles (airplanes, automobiles, ships, etc.).
- Repair and refinish wood frames and surfaces.
Advancement and mobility
- Experience leads to supervisory positions.
