Job description

These individuals record and receive payments from customers who purchase goods and services. Some also sell foreign currency. They work in:

  • Businesses (shops, restaurants, cinemas, etc.)
  • Sports and recreation centres
  • Exchange offices
  • General government

Environment

  • Controlled ambient temperature

Main tasks

  • Locate the price of products, services, or tickets and establish the total payment required.
  • Weigh the merchandise and bulk products.
  • Receive and process the various methods of payment.
  • Carry out transactions using a machine (cash register, optical scanner, etc.).
  • Pack goods or place them in bags.
  • Fill shelves, as required.
  • Clean the counter around the cash register.
  • Calculate the amounts collected at the end of the shift and reconcile them with the total sales figure.
  • Calculate foreign currency exchange rates, if applicable.
  • Verify the age of customers purchasing lottery tickets, alcohol, tobacco, or cannabis products.

Advancement and mobility

  • Experience or additional training leads to supervisory positions.
