Using Assisted Procreation Services

Fertility Assessment

During the fertility assessment, your doctor establishes a diagnosis of infertility and attempts to identify its causes. To make this diagnosis, the doctor will ask you and your partner to take certain tests. The results of these tests constitute the basic medical report for the couple or the woman. From this report, your doctor will advise you on certain steps to stimulate fertility. The results may also show that your difficulties conceiving are related to factors other than infertility.

If necessary, your doctor will refer you to a gynecologist, a designated regional centre or an assisted procreation centre. You may then complete a further assessment or undergo appropriate treatments.

The basic medical report and additional necessary tests

The basic medical report and additional necessary tests establish a diagnosis of infertility. Once the causes are identified, certain steps are proposed to help stimulate fertility.

A private procreation centre cannot force you and your partner to undergo tests and ultrasounds at its own clinic. You are free to have them done at the clinic of your choice.

Appropriate Treatment for Your Situation

The choice of assisted procreation treatment differs according to the cause of infertility. The presence or absence of a transmissible genetic disease also influences this choice. The treatment most appropriate for you is determined after a discussion with your doctor.

Possible treatments include:

Treatments at Regional Assisted Procreation Centres

Regional assisted procreation centres provide fertility assessment and certain assisted procreation treatments.

The following treatments are offered in these centres:

  • Ovulation stimulation or induction
  • Intrauterine insemination, including the ultrasound monitoring of ovarian follicles
  • Certain medical procedures needed for in vitro fertilization, such as ovulation stimulation or induction, ultrasound monitoring of ovarian follicles up to the day of follicular puncture and patient support after the embryo transfer

These are the regional centres:

  • Hôpital de Chicoutimi (CIUSSS du Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean)
  • Centre hospitalier régional de Trois-Rivières (CIUSSS de la Mauricie-et-du-Centre-du-Québec)
  • Centre hospitalier universitaire de Sherbrooke (CHUS)
  • CHU de Québec–Université Laval

Treatments at Some University Hospital Centres

When in vitro fertilization is the appropriate treatment for your situation, the doctor at the regional centre will refer you to an assisted procreation centre that provides specialized in vitro fertilization services.

It is possible that your regional centre performs the first treatments. These are ovarian stimulation and ultrasound monitoring of the ovarian follicles up to the date of follicular puncture. Follicular puncture is the retrieval of eggs from the woman’s body. This retrieval is performed at an assisted procreation centre.

In vitro fertilization services are provided at the following places:

  • McGill University Health Centre
  • Centre hospitalier universitaire Sainte-Justine
