The consequences of mistreatment are:

  • Appearance of temporary or permanent physical effects
  • Appearance of suicidal thoughts and destructive behaviour
  • Higher rates of illness and mortality
  • Loss of savings to provide for one’s well-being
  • Development of anxiety, confusion and depression
  • Withdrawal
  • Feeling of insecurity
  • Increase in emergency room visits
  • Suicide

While the older adult who is being mistreated is the first to be affected by the consequences of mistreatment, the people around them also suffer negative effects. The person’s family and friends can also be affected. Mistreatment is not an individual problem.
