There are approximately 7,600 Attikameks in Québec. Most of them (80%) live in Manawan, Wemotaci and Obedjiwan. All of these communities speak Attikamek and use French as a second language.

The Conseil de la nation Atikamekw conducts negotiations with a view to obtaining recognition of ancestral and territorial rights as well as the right to self-government. The Conseil’s mission is to officially represent all Attikameks at the regional, national and international levels, as well as to promote their rights and interests in the social, economic and cultural spheres. It also offers a range of services to Atikamekw Nation members which include social and technical services, education, language and culture, economic development and document management. Moreover, the Attikameks have created various organizations such as Services forestiers Atikamekw Aski and Mamo Ateskewin, an association that brings together the territory’s hunters, fishers, trappers and gatherers.
