One or several professionals will assess your needs. Thereafter, they will recommend assistive devices that are appropriate for your situation.
These recommendations may include the following:
- Adapting your environment
- Learning new strategies to increase your autonomy
- Reviewing your assistive device if you already have one, in order to:
- Verify that you are using it in the best way possible
- Replace it with another model
Criteria for Allocating an Assistive Device
The assistive device that will be recommended:
- Allows you to be autonomous on a daily basis
- Meets your needs in the simplest way possible
- Is the most economical in the event that several assistive devices suit your needs
An assistive device can be recommended for each of your needs identified during the assessment. Where a single assistive device can meet several of your needs, the loan of that particular device will be prioritised.
Essential Needs of Daily Life
The assistive devices covered by various assistive device programs are those essential to your lifestyle habits, for example:
- Hygiene and other bodily functions
The various programs do not cover leisure activities and sports.
Allocation of a Device Without Regard to Your Ability to Pay
If your request is authorised, the assistive device will be loaned to you free of charge or you will be reimbursed without regard to yours or your family’s ability to pay.
Please note that if you have a motor skills service dog, only a portion of the animal’s maintenance costs will be reimbursed each year.
Rules for Loans and Returns
When you no longer use an assistive device, you must return it to the establishment that loaned it to you.
The establishment takes back this device, cleans, repairs or refurbishes it in order to lend it to someone else.
The assistive device programs prioritise the lending of refurbished assistive devices. A new device can be loaned to you only if a refurbished one that is suitable to your needs is not available.
Should a new assistive device be proposed, you will be able to try various models. You may also try out the selected device in order to learn how to use it well.
Replacing an Assistive Device
Assistive devices that are loaned can be replaced at no cost when an important change affects:
- Your medical condition (for example, a deterioration in your health that requires the use of a different type of assistive device)
- Your physical condition (for example, a gain in weight that prevents you from using the loaned assistive device adequately)
- Features of the assistive device:
- Normal wear and tear (the device must be used for some time)
- Repair costs exceed maximum amount allowed
However, you may not request to change the assistive device loaned to you for one that is more current. The evolution of technology is not a valid reason to request the replacement of an assistive device.
You must replace the assistive device loaned to you at your own expense if it has been:
- Damaged due to negligence or misuse
- Broken as a result of a fire or vandalism
You must therefore have insurance so you can replace your assistive device if any of these events occurs. Indeed, no new device of the same type can subsequently be loaned to you for a period of 2 years.
