All women with a health insurance card (RAMQ) are eligible for free abortion services. However, where they receive the services may depend on their situation and stage of the pregnancy. Services differ at each establishment depending on the weeks of pregnancy.
There are 2 methods of abortion, namely, medical abortion (abortion pill) and surgical abortion. The abortion pill can be used up to 9 weeks of pregnancy. Surgical abortion can be done up to 12 weeks of pregnancy at most establishments, with some places allowing up to 14 weeks. Women more than 14 weeks pregnant must contact the Centre des rendez-vous en avortement de Montréal (page available in French only).
Age of consent
Girls aged 14 years and up do not need parental consent to get an abortion; they may give consent themselves for an abortion. The decision of whether or not to continue their pregnancy is entirely theirs.
Girls aged 13 years and younger must obtain the consent of their parents or guardians to have an abortion. If the adolescent and her parents disagree over the decision to take, a CLSC worker may help. If they fail to agree, the court may be called upon to intervene.
