There are other possibilities to the emergency room. Before going to the emergency room, if your situation does not require immediate assistance, you have the following choices:
- See a family doctor;
- Call 811. A nurse will assess your situation and may be able to give you specific advice. The nurse will also be able to tell you if you should consult a doctor quickly;
- For a minor health problem, you have other options. See the Finding a health resource page to discover these options.
Note that the estimated waiting time to see a doctor Read the content of the note 1 depends on the number of nurses and doctors on site and the health condition of the patients in the emergency department at the time of your arrival. Urgent cases are treated in order of priority.
If the emergency room remains your best option, the emergency room situation across Québec and in your region is as follows.

Footer note number 1The estimated waiting time for a non-priority case to see a doctor is based on the clientele who arrive in the emergency department waiting room. It varies according to the clinical severity of a person and the person’s condition. Priority cases will be seen more quickly while other cases will wait longer. The estimated waiting time can vary quickly as the situation progresses and it may not reflect reality when you arrive at the emergency department.
