QUÉBEC CITY, Jan. 15, 2018 /CNW Telbec/ - It was with tremendous pride that the Bureau de normalisation du Québec (BNQ), last November 28, became the world's first certification body accredited by the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI). This accreditation allows it to audit legitimately any enterprise operating in the aluminium value chain and seeking certification according to ASI standards.

The scope of the ASI accreditation awarded to the BNQ includes the entire aluminium production value chain, from bauxite ore extraction to finished products, including aluminium recycling, in the following countries and territories:

  • Canada
  • Australia
  • United States
  • United Kingdom
  • France

The Aluminium Stewardship Initiative is a non-profit standards setting and certification organization, bringing together major world players in the aluminium value chain, with a commitment to maximizing the contribution of aluminium to a sustainable society. This accreditation will allow the BNQ to contribute to recognition of the best management practices of aluminium sector enterprises. The ASI certification program has three main components:

  1. a performance standard in sustainable development, addressing governance and best practices in environmental management and the social component of sustainable development;
  2. a chain of custody, capable of proving that certified or recycled aluminium comes from enterprises that have implemented the best management practices derived from the ASI Performance Standard;
  3. an ASI Assurance Manual, which presents the audit and certification processes for the Performance Standard and the chain of custody.

The BNQ's interventions will concentrate on the deployment of recognized audit practices for enterprises seeking to be certified, while the ASI will issue its certificates based on the results of the BNQ's audits.

The BNQ is the only body in Canada accredited by the ASI and can offer the service in both official languages.
