Application of the Firearms Registration Act by peace officers

Any person in possession of a non-restricted firearm, whether that person owns it or not, must agree to make the firearm available to a peace officer who requests it for verification.  

The peace officer may also require the person to provide any other information conducive to identifying the firearm and its owner. A peace officer who has reasonable grounds to believe that a person is in possession of a firearm that is not registered in accordance with the FRA may seize the firearm. 

Wildlife protection officers can also enforce the entire Firearms Registration Act (FRA), as can any police officer. They may also issue a notice requiring an owner to apply for registration of their firearm. An owner who refuses or fails to apply for registration or provide proof of registration within 14 days of receiving the notice is guilty of an offence and liable to a fine. 

Anyone who contravenes the FRA or makes a false declaration commits an offence and is liable to a fine.
