Bicycle Route Rules

A bicycle route is a public roadway, or section of a public roadway, where traffic rules are modified to protect cyclists’ safety.

The signs and layout are different to allow cyclists to share to road with other users.

How to Use a Bicycle Route

When riding your bicycle, specific rules need to be followed in addition to the other traffic rules.

Riding a bicycle

You can ride anywhere in the lane as long you go in the direction of the traffic. Two bicycles can also ride side by side.

When a sign allows you to ride against the flow of the traffic, you must keep as close to the curb or right side of the road as possible. You must also keep behind other cyclists in a single file, if applicable.

On foot

When walking on a bicycle route, the same rules must be followed as on other public roads. For more information, visit the Pedestrian Safety Rules and Tips page.

By vehicle

When driving on a bicycle route with a vehicle, the maximum speed is 30 km/h. Also, you do not have to respect the 1 m distance requirement when passing or crossing a pedestrian or cyclist, as long as there is enough space to allow safe passing or crossing. You must, however, slow down before performing your manoeuvre.
