Resources for Teachers and Other Concerned Professionals

Teachers and other concerned professionals can adapt their methods in order to facilitate the integration of students with disabilities. This section lists various means and tools used for this purpose.

Most universities have published one or more guides for teachers and other concerned professionals. They are available on their respective websites.

Some educational institutions also share inclusive pedagogical practices and approaches that sometimes come with training. For example:

• Offering various options with respect to language, mathematical expressions and symbols (e.g. glossaries, lexicons, etc.)
• Highlighting the importance of having learning objectives
• Fostering collaboration between students in order to support effort and perseverance
• Using flexible evaluation methods that provide precise and ongoing information in order to determine the comprehension and knowledge of students with disabilities

The Consortium d’animation sur la persévérance et la réussite en enseignement supérieur (CAPRES) has developed a web page on universal design for learning (UDL, in French only), which involves the implementation of various pedagogical practices that target the success of every student, whatever their differences. This page includes videoclips and documents that can help teachers adapt their teaching methods in order to take into account their students’ differences and foster the learning and development of each person. The pedagogical applications of the UDL are available online (in French only).

In addition, procedures relating to accommodation measures or exams are often posted on the university’s website.

• A number of tools and measures are also available to teachers. They incude:
• A tutorial on ways of adding subtitles to classes in Zoom
• An explanation of the role of specialized resources present in the classroom
• The option to wear a transparent mask in situations where health measures need to be adopted
