For over 400 years, we have built thriving, proud and creative societies on both sides of the border. In recent decades, we have considerably strengthened our political, diplomatic, economic, commercial, and institutional relations.
Québec has nine offices in the U.S.: New York, Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, Seattle and Washington. Their goal is to strengthen our political and economic relations with stakeholders in every sector.
Trade relations
In 2024, Québec and the United States engaged in more trade than at any other moment in the history of our economies totalling US$104.5 billion, a 43% increase over 5 years.
Québec is a key partner for the United States, particularly in the energy, natural resources, and aerospace and defence sectors.
Aluminum
Québec is the No. 1 producer of primary aluminum in North America, with 3M tons produced in 2023, which represents 70% of total North American production. It is also the No. 1 supplier of aluminum products for 33 states.
Québec’s aluminum is a critical material for U.S. national security, and it gives the U.S. military its edge. Our aluminum is also a vital component of several strategic North American value chains: food and beverage, automotive, aerospace and construction.
Critical Minerals
Québec has the most diversified subsoil for mineral resources in Canada, accounting for 41 of the 50 (82%) minerals considered critical to the American economy and security according to the United States Geological Survey. More than 20 mines and 49 mining projects are under development, with 32 targeting critical minerals.
Several strategic industries require critical minerals: semiconductors, defence equipment, automotive, high-performance alloys, and hydrogen and renewable energy technology components.
Lumber
In 2024, Québec supplied about 15% of the value of U.S. softwood lumber imports, making it the 2nd biggest foreign supplier behind only the rest of Canada. Québec has contributed to keeping construction costs affordable which is essential to rebuilding communities affected by climate disasters.
Québec is an environmentally responsible source of forest products. It manages its forests responsibly and sustainably, without resorting to deforestation or forest degradation. Forest vocation is preserved at all managed sites.
