When do I need to self-isolate?

You have COVID-19

You must self-isolate for at least 5 days. The period of self-isolation starts with the onset of symptoms or, in the absence of symptoms, the date when the sample was taken.

After these 5 days, if your symptoms have improved and you have not had a fever for 24 hours, without taking medication for fever, you may resume your essential activities (school, work) while following the instructions indicated below.

For the next few days (generally 5 days):

  • Wear a mask during any social interaction;
  • Avoid contact with vulnerable people.
  • Avoid participating in non-essential social events.
  • Keep a distance of 2 metres from other people whenever possible.

Children 5 years of age and younger, and people who cannot wear a mask because of their health condition, must make absolutely sure to minimize their contact with vulnerable people and to avoid taking part in non-essential social events. To find out the recognized health conditions that prevent people from wearing a mask or face covering, see the page Port du masque ou du couvre-visage.

After 10 days, you may resume your usual activitiesl while taking steps to limit the spread of the virus.

These self-isolation instructions also apply to people who present COVID-19 symptoms and have not done a screening test.

Moreover, unvaccinated people who have never had COVID-19 must self-isolate for the first 5 days.

Children 5 years of age and younger, and people who cannot wear a mask because of their health condition, must make absolutely sure to minimize their contact with vulnerable people and to avoid taking part in non-essential social events.
