Calculating the financial resources you need to sponsor a person

You must demonstrate you have sufficient financial resources to meet the needs:

  • of the person you sponsor
  • of the family members accompanying or not accompanying the person you sponsor
  • of the persons you have already sponsored, if you have an accepted engagement in their favour that is still in effect

Calculating the income you need

You must demonstrate you have the income to sponsor a member of your family, by adding up the amounts to meet your family's needs and the amounts to meet the needs of the sponsored persons.

To calculate the income you need, use the electronic calculator.

To assess your situation before calculating your basic income, consult the detailed information in the form Financial capacity evaluation (PDF 433 Kb).

How to demonstrate your income

The demonstration of your financial capacity must be based on income from Canadian sources or property held in Canada. You must present, depending on your situation:

  • tax documents
  • financial statements
  • proof of employment

Your spouse's income may be taken into account if your spouse signs the sponsorship application with you.

You must have this disposable income within 12 months (1 year) preceding your application and demonstrate that you will continue to have it for the duration of your undertaking.

If you have an undertaking already accepted and still in effect, the necessary resources to meet the needs of the persons concerned will also be taken into account.
