2026-2027 hunting seasons for moose

Maintaining restrictions in zone 17

Based on the results of the 2021 aerial surveys and in compliance with obligations under the James Bay and Northern Quebec Agreement (JBNQA), moose hunting activities in zone 17 will be limited to harvesting by Indigenous people for subsistence hunting, until further notice. The decline in the population of moose observed in this area implies a decrease in harvesting.

Hunting dates are established based on the zone where hunting is permitted and the type of weapon used.

Modifications may be made to authorized periods at any time if required by circumstances. It is your responsibility to comply with the rules in effect before engaging in your activity.

Starting in 2026, in several zones, moose hunting will no longer operate under a system of alternating permissive and restrictive years.

In zones 1 to 12, 14 to 16, 22, 26 and 27, as well as in wildlife reserves and certain ZECs, the hunter must now have obtained, through the draw, a moose without antlers hunting licence (any moose with antlers less than 10 cm) in order to harvest a moose without antlers.

In zones 13, 18 and 28, the alternating-year system will remain in effect. Moose without antlers hunting will therefore be closed in 2026 (restrictive year) and open in 2027 (permissive year). However, in zone 13, it will also be open during the bow and crossbow hunting season in 2026.

Lastly, in zones 19 south and 29, hunting will be open every year for all segments, with no requirement to hold a special licence for moose without antlers hunting.

Specifications on the hunting zones

Hunting may be prohibited in certain territories within a given zone. If it is permitted, the conditions may differ from those of the hunting zone in which those territories are located. You will need to communicate with the person or group responsible for the territories in question to find out the rules.

To find out what to do before, during and after hunting moose, refer to the rules for this species.
