- Control the purchasing department’s budget.
- Evaluate the cost and quality of products or services.
- Negotiate and supervise the negotiation of purchase contracts.
- Identify companies selling materials, equipment, or supplies.

- Examine and deal with complaints against suppliers.

Training and requirements
Formation
Numerous training and study programs lead to managerial or executive positions.
Also required
- Several years of experience as a purchasing agent.
Sometimes required
- A university degree or college diploma in Engineering, Business Administration, Commerce or Economics, or other discipline related to the company’s products is usually required.
- A degree in a related discipline may be required for managers of procurement of specialized commercial services.
- Several years of experience as a middle manager in the areas of goods production, utilities, transportation, or construction are usually required.
- The professional designation in accounting for senior finance executives is usually required.
- The professional designation in supply chain management (SCM) or enrolment in the program of study leading to it may be required.
- Certification in change management (PROSCI) may be an asset.
- Knowledge of the SAP Production Management System (Systems, Applications, and Products for Data Processing) may be an asset.
