Job description
These individuals install and maintain electronic systems and equipment. They analyze, build, test, and inspect circuits, systems, and networks. They ensure quality control of electronic equipment and evaluate the performance of components. They work for:
- Industrial laboratories and research centres
- Hospitals with medical electrical equipment
- Consulting engineering firms
- Government agencies or private companies with medical electrical equipment
- Communications and telecommunications companies
- Businesses selling electronic devices and equipment
- Educational institutions
- Electronics manufacturing, processing, and assembly companies

Main tasks
- Carry out test procedures using various measuring instruments and specialized software.
- Maintain and repair communication and control systems.
- Recommend and implement solutions for electronic failures.
- Analyze the costs of electronic systems and optimization solutions.
- Produce diagrams and drawings that describe the characteristics of electronic devices and their components.
- Conduct applied research under the direction of Researchers or Engineers.
- Draft technical reports.
Advancement and mobility
- There is some mobility to related positions (maintenance and repair of electronic equipment, instrumentation, avionics, etc.).
- Experience leads to management positions.
Training and requirements
Formation
Bachelor’s degree or diploma of college studies
Also required
- Membership in the Ordre des technologues professionnels du Québec (OTPQ [Quebec Order of Professional Technologists]) to use the title of Professional Technologist.
Sometimes required
- Knowledge of industry norms and standards may be considered an asset.
