Job description
These individuals assemble parts to make furniture and fixtures. They are employed by furniture manufacturers. Furniture Inspectors inspect assembled furniture to ensure their quality. They are employed by furniture manufacturers. Furniture Finishers apply various treatments to new wood or metal furniture. They stain them, varnish them, sand them, paint them, and so on. They are employed by furniture manufacturers, furniture stores, or furniture finishing and repair shops. Furniture Restorers refinish repaired, worn, or aged furniture. They are self-employed or work in furniture finishing or repair shops.

Main tasks
Assemblers
- Prepare, sand, assemble, and adjust wooden parts and fixtures to form furniture.
- Reinforce furniture and fixtures.
- Install metal fittings (e.g. hinges). Inspectors
- Report defective parts or finished products for repair.
- Make adjustments and minor repairs.
- Write down information on products that have been tested. Furniture Finishers
- Finish furniture by hand or machine.
- Stain or varnish wood to specified shades, applying appropriate stains or colour charts.
- Apply primers and coatings (e.g. lacquer).
- Decorate or mark wood surfaces to give them an antique look.
- Clean and polish furniture.
- Sand metal furniture to prepare for finishing, then coat with paint. Furniture Restorers
- Strip wood surfaces, level grooves, and sand surfaces.
- Harmonize dyes to obtain the original finish.
- Apply the appropriate varnish, then polish and wax surfaces.
- Sand or grind metal surfaces and paint them.
- Make minor repairs to furniture.
- Perform the tasks of the furniture varnisher, as required.
