Main tasks
- Develop plans for the layout of a plant and its facilities.
- Study the efficiency, reliability, and performance of machinery, systems, and facilities and make recommendations.
- Design flexible or integrated manufacturing systems and processes.
- Analyze production costs.
- Determine human resources and skills requirements and develop training programs.
- Establish performance standards, evaluation systems, pay scales, and incentive programs.
- Improve industrial hygiene and safety.
- Identify hazards (e.g. fire hazards) and take corrective action.
- Supervise Technicians, Technologists, Analysts, administrative staff, and other Engineers.
Advancement and mobility
- There is a high degree of mobility between industrial engineering specializations and lower-level positions.
- These individuals may work in related fields (science, engineering, sales, marketing, management, etc.).
- Experience leads to senior or supervisory positions.
