Job description

These individuals prepare models and engineering drawings from technical information. They work closely with Engineers, Architects, and Industrial Designers. They work for:

  • Consulting firms
  • Construction companies
  • Public utilities
  • Manufacturers
  • The government

Environment

  • Controlled ambient temperature

Main tasks

  • Develop and prepare plans, models, and engineering drawings from sketches, preliminary concepts, engineering calculations, and specifications.
  • Operate computer-aided design and drafting workstations or conventional drafting stations.
  • Prepare the specifications and evaluate the costs of the construction material.
  • Ensure drawings follow specifications and design data.
  • Complete documentation, prepare contracts and bids, and write technical reports.
  • Supervise and train other Technologists, Technicians, and Draftspersons.

Advancement and mobility

  • There is some mobility between these positions and other fields (e.g. mechanical, electrical, or civil engineering) with additional training or experience.
  • Experience leads to senior or supervisory positions.
