Job description

These individuals use X-ray machines and radiation therapy to administer ionizing radiation. This allows them to take pictures of body structures to diagnose and treat injuries and diseases. They work for:

  • Hospitals
  • Oncology centres
  • Clinics
  • Radiology laboratories
  • CEGEPs and Universities

Environment

  • Controlled ambient temperature
  • Equipment, machinery, tools
  • Biological agents
  • Radiation

Main tasks

  • Produce X-rays or anatomical images of the human body.
  • Use a variety of equipment (conventional radiology, ultrasound, mammography, etc.).
  • Record and process patient data.
  • Carry out checks and quality control of X-ray equipment and devices.
  • Monitor and care for patients during X-ray examinations.
  • Explain procedures to patients, position people and equipment, and apply radiation safety rules.
  • Train and supervise radiology students as required.
  • Supervise other radiological technologists, as required.

Advancement and mobility

  • Additional training grants some mobility between the three groups of medical radiation technologists.
  • These individuals may specialize in various fields (mammography, magnetic resonance imaging, etc.).
