Job description
These individuals hear civil and criminal cases. They dispense justice in federal and provincial courts.
Environment
- Controlled ambient temperature
Main tasks
- Preside over courts.
- Interpret and enforce procedure rules.
- Inform the jury about the laws that apply to a given case.
- Determine the admissibility of evidence presented, examines it, and renders a verdict of guilt or innocence.
- Determine the degree of responsibility of the accused or defendant in cases that are not heard before a jury.
- Sentence guilty persons convicted in criminal cases.
- Fix the amount of damages or determine the appropriate civil remedy.
- Grant divorces, divide property between spouses, and decide custody of children when parents do not agree or when there are other guardians.
- Enforce court decisions about access and support.
- Decide on disputes:
- Between the government, its agencies, and citizens.
- In the fields of labour relations, health, and safety at work.
- With regard to the various public compensation schemes (SAAQ, CNESST, etc.).
- With regard to the protection of the agricultural territory.
