Job description

These individuals create graphic concepts or participate in designing and creating them. They use specialized software to prepare the make-up, lettering, and layout templates of web or paper documents. They digitize and retouch images. They may also take photographs. They are self-employed or work for:

  • Advertising and marketing agencies
  • Printing services providers
  • Publishing and communication firms
  • Multimedia production centres
  • Television and film production companies
  • Graphic design studios
  • Digital print shops
  • Various businesses (insurance, engineering, etc.)

Environment

  • Controlled ambient temperature

Main tasks

  • Note a project’s guidelines and specifications.
  • Enter the different elements of a document (titles, text, drawings, illustrations, graphs, etc.) on a computer.
  • Assemble documents for printing or multimedia distribution.
  • Produce proofs and camera-ready materials using computers, specialized software, graphic tablets, scanners, etc.
  • Collaborate with various professionals (Artistic Directors, Graphic Designers, Project Managers, Writers, etc.).

Advancement and mobility

  • Experience or additional training leads to Graphic Designer positions.

Training and requirements

Formation

Bachelor’s degree or diploma of college studies

Also required

  • Presentation file illustrating creative abilities and artistic talent (portfolio).

Sometimes required

  • Experience in designing multimedia products may be required.
