These individuals enforce the rules that govern different sports. These rules apply to sporting games and competitions.

Main tasks
- Referee at sporting events or athletic competitions.
- Record elapsed time and score during an event or competition.
- Judge the performance of competitors and record points.
- Impose penalties for infractions.
- Decide on the results.
- Calculate points and other sports statistics.
- Collaborate with coaches, players, and organizing committees.
- Check references for athletes participating in sports or special sporting events.
- Follow up on written objections.
