Job description

These individuals perform tasks related to hairstyling (cutting, colouring, setting, etc.) considering the tastes and morphological characteristics of clients. They also offer hair care services. They are self-employed or work in:

  • Private residences (home salon)
  • Beauty salons
  • Shopping malls
  • Residences for the elderly
  • Home-care centres
  • Cinema and television dressing rooms

Environment

  • Controlled ambient temperature
  • Equipment, machinery, tools
  • Odours
  • Humidity

Main tasks

  • Shampoo and cut hair.
  • Apply hygienic and curative treatments to the scalp and hair.
  • Analyze hair and scalp to give advice on their maintenance.
  • Sell products and order supplies.
  • Lay, clean, and style wigs, hairpieces, and extensions.
  • Greet customers and make appointments.
  • Maintain the workplace.
  • Learn about products, fashion trends, and new technologies.
  • Act as a judge in contests, as required.
  • Train and supervise staff, as required.

Advancement and mobility

  • Qualified Hairstylists receive a Red Seal endorsement upon successful completion of the Interprovincial Examination

  • Several years of experience may substitute for educational and training requirements.
