Job description

The Directors of Transportation Operations direct the activities of:

  • Railroads or Airlines
  • Bus routes
  • Public transportation
  • Navigation lines (over water)
  • Trucking lines (over land)

Freight Movement Managers direct the movement of goods. They are employed in:

  • Freight transportation and shipping companies
  • Shipping agencies
  • The retail shipping department
  • The manufacturing sector

Environment

  • Controlled ambient temperature
  • Climatic conditions

Main tasks

Transportation Managers - Operations

  • Define service policies and standards.
  • Ensure compliance with transportation regulations.
  • Ensure the dispatch of road vehicles, ships, or aircraft.
  • Control the budget and company or department performance.
  • Manage acquisitions.
  • Draft reports.
  • Plan schedule and policy changes.
  • Recruit and train staff.

Transportation Managers - Freight Movement

  • Monitor shipping schedules and track the movement of goods in transit.
  • Define performance targets and set rates for transportation services.
  • Develop plans and procedures that apply to the transportation and storage of goods.
  • Negotiate services and preferential rates.
  • Control the department’s budget.
