Job description

These individuals plan, organize, direct, control, and evaluate the activities of a farm operation. They grow and harvest crops and raise animals. They are also responsible for marketing the farm’s products. They may specialize in a particular crop or livestock operation. They usually own their own establishment.

Main tasks

  • Run the entire operation of a farm, ranch, or orchard.

  • Organize and coordinate the cultivation of products.
  • Raise livestock or other animals.
  • Hire and manage farm personnel.
  • Develop a marketing program.
  • Establish and maintain production and financial records.
  • Purchase agricultural machinery, animals, seeds, fodder, and various supplies.
  • Maintain machinery, agricultural equipment, and buildings.
  • Carry out agricultural work.
