Training to Find a Job

If you want to take a training program so you can find a job, you could be eligible for financial assistance as part of the Manpower Training measure. 

Eligibility

You could be eligible for the Manpower Training measure if:

  • you are at least 16 years old
  • you stopped going to school full-time for at least 24 months, except under certain circumstances mentioned at your evaluation
  • you meet the training program’s eligibility criteria

Your eligibility will also depend on an assessment of your situation, which will be conducted based on other eligibility criteria specific to the Measure.

Lack of training must be a significant barrier to getting a job.

Training program

The training program must allow you enter the job market as soon as possible.

Normally, you must take full-time training.

Here are a few examples.

General training:

  • literacy courses to address any challenges you may have with reading, writing, mathematics or basic computer skills
  • French courses, in some circumstances, to help you find a job in Québec
  • courses in other languages (English, Spanish or another language needed to practise a given trade)
  • general education courses so you can enter a vocational or technical training program

Qualifying training:

  • a secondary-level vocational training program
  • a short-term college-level technical training program, such as an attestation program, as long as it enables you to enter the labor market
  • a short university program, such as a program leading to a certificate, provided it enables to you re-enter the job market
  • on-the-job training in a practice enterprise to acquire work-related skills in a simulated business environment

The total duration of the training activities offered under the Manpower Training measure is no more than 48 months (or 4 years). 

Financial assistance

The employment assistance available under the Manpower Training measure is:

  • $400 a week for qualifying training programs
  • $300 a week for general education

Exceptions may apply.

The financial assistance you receive will depend on your situation and will be determined when you register. You may also be entitled to a reimbursement of certain expenses, such as:

  • daycare expenses
  • transportation expenses
  • training expenses
  • accommodation expenses if you have to travel to take the program
