Changing Careers

You may want to change careers for several reasons, for instance:

  • You’re interested in a new professional challenge
  • There is no longer any demand for your trade or occupation
  • The pool of available workers is too large

Preparing your career change

Before changing careers, you must identify an area of employment that interests you. Various tools and resources are available to help you in choosing a career. These will help you make up your mind and find a trade that reflects your interests.

You can then find out about the job prospects for your chosen trade by consulting the descriptions of the trades and occupations on the Exploring Trades and Occupations page.

Return to school

The descriptions of the trades and occupations explain the training needed to practise the chosen trade. Your current qualifications may not be sufficient. If this is the case, you can consider returning to school or applying for recognition of your prior learning and acquired competencies.

To find out more about the type of training and possible educational approaches, consult the Return to School page.

Support in finding a job

Several Employment Assistance Programs can help you in your job search and your career change process.
