To transport the body of a deceased person, you need to contact a funeral services company.
Coroner's authorization
A coroner's authorization is required to transport outside Québec the body of a person who died in Québec. This is also the case for bringing into Québec the body of a person who died outside the province:
in violent, obscure or negligent circumstances
when the identity of the person or the cause of death is unknown.
In this case, you need to contact a funeral services company, which will ensure that the necessary authorization is obtained.
Death outside Canada
If the body is outside Canada, it is also possible to contact the Canadian government office abroad closest to the place of death. In the event of the death of a Québec resident outside Canada, contact the consular services in the country where the body is located to determine the procedures in effect. If close relatives or friends are able to do so, they can contact a Québec funeral services company. Its representative will be able to assist them in repatriating the body to Québec.
Insurance company repatriation service
Some insurance companies offer a repatriation service, i.e., a service to return the body of a deceased person, and an emergency telephone line. For more information, contact the deceased's insurance company.
Notifying departments and agencies
To ensure that all the government departments and agencies concerned are notified of the death, consult the page Adjust government benefits.
