Steps to be taken by new parents
New parents have a number of official formalities to complete when welcoming a new child. They also have access to services to mark the child's arrival.
Choosing or changing a child's name
The procedures differ depending on whether you want to choose a child's name or change it.
Declaration of birth
You are required to file a declaration of birth with the registrar of civil status within 30 days of your child's birth, along with a copy of the attestation of birth.
Simplified Access to Birth-Related Programs and Services
The Directeur de l’état civil will notify specific Québec and federal government departments and agencies of the birth of a child.
Registering for the Public Health Insurance Plan
For parents of children born or adopted outside Quebec. Or if you have not taken advantage of simplified access to birth-related programs and services.
