Active, inclusive and positive aging

The rapid increase in the number of older adults in the population is a demographic phenomenon observed in many societies around the world. One of the reasons for this increase is a longer lifespan, which has many advantages, both for individuals and communities.

Aging is a normal process. Advancing in age can be a positive experience when you have the possibility of living fully and continuing to be part of society, in your own way, based on your interests, abilities and needs. Old age is a period of life that deserves to be recognized and valued.

Aging means having to deal with change and loss, but it is also an opportunity to enjoy new experiences by benefiting from what you have learned, whether you are 60 or 90 years old.

The concept of active aging

Staying active as you age helps maintain a state of physical, mental and social well being throughout life. It means continuing to do what feels good, at your own pace and according to your preferences.

As people age, they continue to play an essential role in society by participating in Québec’s family, social, cultural and economic life.

Changing the way we look at aging

Aging is often viewed negatively. Yet, older adults provide valuable support to their family and friends and to their community. Their knowledge, skills and life experience enrich Québec society and all its generations. They are, for instance:

  • parents and grandparents;
  • volunteers;
  • elected officials;
  • consumers;
  • workers;
  • entrepreneurs;
  • donors;
  • voters;
  • informal caregivers;
  • mentors;
  • students;
  • artists;
  • etc.

Every person, regardless of their age, contributes to the vitality of communities. While some people provide support to other people, participate in community life, work, create or study, others choose to live a life of contemplation or relaxation. All these ways of life are valid and deserve to be recognized.

An inclusive society for all ages

Growing older should never mean that a person feels excluded. Everyone has the right to age with respect, dignity and according to their choices.

An inclusive society is one that adapts to the needs of all people, at all ages. It values intergenerational connections and provides healthy, safe and welcoming environments.
