Eligibility for living kidney donation
Anyone can decide to donate a kidney. However, they must:
- be 18 years of age or older;
- be able to provide free and informed consent;
- meet various criteria with respect to their physical and psychosocial health.
Some health problems are a contraindication to kidney donation:
- serious heart disease;
- active or recent cancer;
- diabetes;
- kidney disease and kidney failure.
There is no age limit for living kidney donation if there are no medical contraindications.
