Eligibility for living kidney donation

Anyone can decide to donate a kidney. However, they must:

  • be 18 years of age or older;
  • be able to provide free and informed consent;
  • meet various criteria with respect to their physical and psychosocial health.

Some health problems are a contraindication to kidney donation:

  • serious heart disease;
  • active or recent cancer;
  • diabetes;
  • kidney disease and kidney failure.

There is no age limit for living kidney donation if there are no medical contraindications.
