Start of cadastral renewal in an area

When work begins in your sector, you will be informed personally and invited to take part. Please note, however, that the start-up work has been completed throughout Québec.

Notice of intention

When cadastral renewal work begins in a sector, the Government sends a notice of intention, in accordance with the Act to promote the reform of the cadastre in Québec, to the mailing address on the assessment roll of the municipality in which your property is located.

This personalized notice includes:

  • a description of the area for which the cadastral renewal work is being done;
  • the name and contact information of the land surveying firm hired to do the work;
  • the date on which work will begin;
  • an invitation to submit any private documents you may have in connection with your property.

What to do to obtain a notice of intention in English

Notices of intention are produced in French, in accordance with the Charter of the French Language. However, you may obtain an English version by calling the toll-free number at the bottom of the notice.

Why did I not receive a notice of intention?

There may be several reasons why you did not receive a notice:

Your property is not affected by the current mandate
Just because another resident in your neighbourhood has received a notice of intention, it does not automatically mean that you will receive one too. Notices are sent according to the breakdown of the work done in a sector covered by a mandate.

The notice was sent to the previous owner
The information used to send the notices is provided by municipalities, mainly from their assessment rolls. It is possible that the information may not be used by the Government immediately after it is provided, meaning that property transfers occurring since that time will not be included. 

How to obtain a notice

We are able to send out copies of notices to property owners who have lost the originals or whose notices were sent to previous owners. Please contact us if you would like a copy of your notice.

Documents sought

In the notice of intention, the Government asks you to provide copies of any private documents in your possession.

These documents are important sources of information for the land surveying firm carrying out the work. They help to ensure that properties are accurately represented on the new cadastral plan.

The main documents sought, and the reasons why property owners may have them, are listed below:

Certificate of location

This document consists in a report and plan in which a land surveyor states his or her opinion of the situation and condition of a property in comparison to the titles, the cadastre, the occupation and the applicable legislation and regulations. It is generally given to the purchaser by the seller when the property changes hands.

Survey plan and technical description

These documents generally contain a representation of the property and details of its measurements. They are produced by a land surveyor in private practice, and are usually requested by a property owner to illustrate and describe a specific aspect of the property, such as a servitude, agricultural zoning or prior agreement, for example before a property transaction takes place.

Minutes of boundary determination

This document, prepared by a land surveyor, sets out recommendations for the boundaries of a property based on an analysis of the evidence provided. A boundary determination is usually requested by property owners who wish to set one or more of their property’s boundaries. Copies are given to all the property owners concerned.

Unregistered ownership title or deed of sale

In some specific situations, an ownership title may not have been entered in the land register. However, it may be helpful to the land surveyor responsible for the cadastral renewal work.
