Signs in a school zone

A school zone is any part of a public highway that runs along the property lines of an institution providing primary or secondary education. It is designed to ensure the safety of students by encouraging road users to be especially cautious when approaching the grounds of this institution.

Here are a few details about signs specific to school zones.

Signs in a school zone

Specific signs are associated with school zones and include yellow-green signs.

The following sign warns drivers that they are approaching a school zone or school crosswalk.

The “Fin” tab sign indicates the end of the school zone. If the speed limit is not the same as before the school zone, a sign indicates the speed limit outside the school zone.

Speed limits in a school zone

In school zones, when the speed limit differs from the one before the zone, signs indicate the permitted limit. Depending on the case, they also display the times, days and months during which the limit applies.

General notice

Fine doubled during the school period

If you do not obey the speed limit in a school zone during the school period, your fine may be doubled. The school period starts at 7 a.m. and ends at 5 p.m., Monday to Friday, from September to June.

The speed limit in a school zone may not exceed 50 km/h during the school period.
