Off-highway vehicle trail patrol

Peace officers and trail wardens (patrol officers) actively patrol snowmobile and ATV trails. Their role is to ensure compliance with the rules governing OHV use in order to protect riders and others who use the territory.

Trail wardens are appointed by an OHV club or by an association of clubs (federation). They are volunteers and must meet specific eligibility requirements.

Club-appointed trail wardens

Trail wardens appointed by a local club patrol within a defined territory. They may stop an OHV vehicle to inspect it and check equipment. They may also ask riders to show:

  • ID with proof of age
  • driver’s licence
  • vehicle registration
  • proof of insurance
  • valid trail access permit

Association-appointed trail wardens

Trail wardens appointed by an association patrol a larger area. In addition to the powers listed above, they may:

  • Go to the location where an OHV or maintenance vehicle is being used or is stopped.
  • Enter and travel on private property, when necessary, under the same conditions as a peace officer.
