School zone signs and signals

A school zone is any part of a public road that runs along the limits of the land of an institution providing elementary or secondary education. The purpose of establishing a school zone is to ensure the safety of students by prompting road users to be extra cautious when approaching land occupied by such an institution.

Here is a quick refresher on school zone traffic signs.

School zone traffic signs

Specific signs with a yellow-green background are associated with school zones.

The “Fin” tab sign indicates where the school zone ends. If the speed limit is not the same as before the school zone, a sign will indicate the speed limit outside the school zone.

Speed limits in a school zone

In school zones, when the speed limit differs from the one preceding the zone, signs are posted to indicate the limit allowed. Where applicable, they also display the times of day, days and months during which the limit applies.

Fines are doubled during the school year

Fines double for speeding in a school zone during the school year. The school year is the period beginning at 7 a.m. and ending at 5 p.m. each day from Monday to Friday, from September to June.

The speed limit in a school zone may not exceed 50 km/h during the school year.
