Back to Final results in Secondary IV and V

Example for determining the final result in Secondary IV and V

Here are some examples of the calculation of the final result in Secondary IV and V for a subject with one competency and for a subject with several competencies or components.

Examples for determining the final result for a subject with one competency

Chloe, Lillian and Xavier, three Secondary IV students, attend different schools. They all wrote a ministerial examination in History of Québec and Canada, and they have just received their achievement record.

The final result for each student was calculated using the following four marks:

  • The raw school mark: the final mark that appears on the school’s report card.
  • The moderated school mark: the school mark that the student obtained after it was moderated by the Ministère: this is the mark used to determine the final result
  • The ministerial examination mark: the mark that the student obtained on the ministerial examination.
  • The converted ministerial examination mark: the mark that the student obtained on the ministerial examination after conversion, if applicable

Example of a final result without conversion

Chloe’s school mark was 71% and her mark on the ministerial examination was 60%.

After moderation by the Ministère, her school mark was lowered to 68%. Her mark on the ministerial examination remained at 60%, since there was no conversion.

On her achievement record, Chloe’s final result for History of Québec and Canada is therefore 66%.

Comprehensive calculation for Chloe: (80% of 68%) + (20% of 60%) = 66%

Example of a final result adjusted to the ministerial examination mark without conversion

Xavier’s school mark was 62% and his mark on the ministerial examination was 70%.

After moderation by the Ministère, his school mark was raised to 64%. His mark on the ministerial examination remained at 70%, since there was no conversion.

Comprehensive calculation for Xavier: (80% of 64%) + (20% of 70%) = 65%

Since the final result cannot be lower than the mark on the ministerial examination, Xavier obtained 70% for History of Québec and Canada.

On his achievement record, Xavier’s final result for History of Québec and Canada is therefore 65%.

Example of a final result with conversion

Lillian’s school mark was 80% and her mark on the ministerial examination was 61%.

After moderation by the Ministère, her school mark was lowered to 76%. Then, after conversion, her mark on the ministerial examination increased to 63%.

On her achievement record, Lillian’s final result for History of Québec and Canada is therefore 73%.

Comprehensive calculation for Lillian: (80% of 76%) + (20% of 63%) = 73%

The comprehensive final result for the subject is always rounded to the nearest integer.

Examples of calculations of the final result for a subject with several competencies or components

For some subjects, the comprehensive result is given for a competency or component. The Secondary IV Science and Technology program (555-444) is a good example. The comprehensive result for this program is made up of the weighted final mark for each of its two components, based on the weighting of the competencies set out in the Framework for the Evaluation of Learning:

  • the Theory component (555- 410), which counts for 60% and is evaluated by the teacher and by the Ministère by means of a ministerial examination
  • the Practical component (555- 420), which counts for 40% and is evaluated solely by the teacher

Here are some examples of the calculation of the comprehensive result for a subject made up of several competencies or components.

Example of a final result with conversion

For the Theory component, Chloe’s school mark was 80% and her mark on the ministerial examination was 61%.

After moderation by the Ministère, her school mark was lowered to 72%. Then, after conversion, the mark for the ministerial examination was set at 64%. Her final result for this component is therefore 70,4%.

Chloe’s school mark for the Practical competency is 90%, which represents her final result for this component.

On her achievement record, Chloe’s final result for Science and Technology is therefore 78%.

Comprehensive calculation for Chloe:

  • Theory component: 60% of 70.4% = 42.2%
  • Practical component: 40% of 90% = 36%
  • Final result: 40.2% + 36% = 78%

The comprehensive final result for the subject is rounded to the nearest integer, which results in 77% on the achievement record.

Example of a final result adjusted to the ministerial examination mark with conversion

For the Theory component, Xavier’s school mark was 68% and his mark on the ministerial examination was 75%.

After moderation by the Ministère, his school mark was raised to 70%. Then, after conversion, the mark for the ministerial examination was set at 76%.

His final result for this component is therefore 76%, since the final result cannot be lower than the mark on the ministerial examination.

Xavier’s school mark for the Practical component is 72%, which represents his final result for this component.

On his achievement record, Xavier’s final result for Science and Technology is therefore 74%.

Comprehensive calculation for Xavier:

  • Theory component: 60% of 76% = 45.6%
  • Practical component: 40% of 72% = 28.8%
  • Final result: 45.6% + 28.8% = 74.4%

The comprehensive final result for the subject is rounded to the nearest integer, which results in 74% on the achievement record.

Comprehensive calculation for Lillian:

  • Theory component: 60% of 73% = 44.4%
  • Practical component: 40% of 61% = 24.4%
  • Final result: 44.4% + 24.4% = 68.8%

The comprehensive final result for the subject is rounded to the nearest integer, which results in 69% on the achievement record.
