Elementary Culture and Citizenship in Québec Program

At the elementary level, the Culture and Citizenship in Québec program relates sociological and ethical approaches to each other in order to foster dialogue and the development of critical thinking. The program will allow the students to:

  • observe cultural realities by asking comprehension questions as well as philosophical or ethical questions, and by finding information related to these realities
  • discern the characteristics of cultural realities
  • compare observations and information and assess their relevance
  • determine characteristics of relationships between people, groups or institutions
  • understand emotions as well as any possible associated reactions and triggers
  • identify and compare different points of view
  • develop their capacity to engage in dialogue and to think critically
  • learn to engage in dialogue by providing support for their ideas, taking an interest in the ideas of others and taking feelings into account
  • express their understanding of cultural realities by drawing up valid findings
  • deepen their knowledge of contemporary cultural realities such as daily rituals, civility, life cycles, the functions of digital tools and environmental movements.

In this program, the same approaches are also used to encourage learning about dialogue and critical thinking about various topics related to human sexuality. These elements of the program respect students’ age and level of psychosexual development.
