Preparing Your Application
Writing a Cover Letter
When applying for a job, it's generally a good idea to include a cover letter, otherwise known as an “application letter” or an “accompanying letter,” with your résumé.
It is an opportunity to introduce yourself and make a first contact with an employer looking for candidates.

Before writing your letter
It is recommended that you have your résumé and the job offer handy while you write your letter. Research the company you're applying to and its sector of activity:
- visit the employer’s website
- view the Exploring Sectors of Activity page to find out about the company's sector of activity, job prospects in that sector and average salaries offered
- find out about the nature of the work and what the job advertised involves.
Next, ask yourself about your interest in the job.
- Is it a new experience or a new challenge? Or is it that you are already familiar with the work involved?
- What are the skills and experiences you wish to highlight? To make your application more interesting, think of things that are not already in your résumé.
Make sure you have the name of the person to whom you should address your letter. This information is generally provided in the job offer. Don’t hesitate to call the company if you need more information.
Tips on writing your cover letter
Your letter should convince the employer to look at your résumé and offer you an interview. By introducing yourself, you can show that you have the qualities needed for the job on offer. Here are a few tips on how to write a good letter.
- Avoid talking only about yourself. Address the company's needs, which are generally described in the job offer.
- Use positive, assertive wording like "I accomplished."
- Show that you are original.
- Avoid copying word-for-word what is already in your résumé. Include new information and find new ways of expressing your ideas.
- Write a maximum of one page.
- Write your letter single-spaced and divide the information into paragraphs.
- Reread your letter carefully before sending it in.
Contents of a cover letter
A cover letter must respect an order of elements.

Indicate the date on which you are sending the letter. Indicate the name, title and professional address of the person to whom your letter is addressed.
First part
Mention how you heard about the job, for example
- an ad in a newspaper or other publication

- personal contacts.
Second part
Explain briefly why you feel you are the right person for the job. You need to invite the person to read your résumé.
Also explain how your education, work experience and skills meet the requirements of the position. The idea is to show how your qualifications would be an asset for the employer:
- explain how your work experience can help you meet the job offer requirements
- write one or two paragraphs
- try to tailor your letter to the company and job in question.
Third part
Thank the person for having taken the time to read your application. Clearly state that you are available for an interview.

End your letter with a standard formal closing like "Sincerely" or "Best regards".
