Guidance in Choosing a Trade or Profession

In addition to the counselling services offered by the public and private sectors, there are many organizations and online resources available to support you in your guidance and career choice process.

Employment assistance services at Services Québec offices

Reception, placement and labour market information services are available to help you integrate or maintain your employment. Employment assistance officers will evaluate your needs and can refer you, under certain conditions, to partner organizations.

Contact an employability services organization in your region or contact your local Services Québec office.

There are different ways to request more information about employment programs, get assistance and check your eligibility.

Online

To submit a request online, sign in or log in to My Account — Employment Assistance — Social Assistance. This account allows you to submit your documents more easily and to receive government communications online.

Finding a guidance counsellor

The Ordre des conseillers et des conseillères d'orientation du Québec can help you find a resource to assist you in your career choice.

This person will be able to advise you on your personal or professional choices for your studies or career.

Reception, Referral, Counselling and Support Services (SARCA) offered by school boards

Academic and Career Guidance Support is provided in school services centres.

Their counsellors can help you develop your project, such as

  • going back to school
  • making a career change
  • having your skills recognized.

Assistance and reference services for literacy and basic training

Info-Alpha is a free literacy and basic training service for adults who are experiencing difficulty

  • reading
  • writing
  • calculating.

Continuing education assistance and reference services

Info-Apprendre is an educational support and referral service. It provides free information on courses and programs offered throughout Québec. 

Information about professions and training programs

Several sources of information are available to help you learn more about professions and training programs.

To find out the level of training required for a trade or profession you're interested in, go to the Exploring Trades and Occupations page.

You can then find out more about the support and programs offered to students of the Vocational Training and Adult General Education.

The trade or profession that interests you may require a college or university diploma. Find out about admission and the programs available for Studying at CEGEP or Studying at university.
